Learner Course

The Motorcycle Learner Course is the first step towards obtaining your NSW motorcycle learner licence.

Eligibility

To attend the course you must:

  • Be at least 16 years and 6 months of age.
  • Have a valid NSW Driver Licence or a Transport for NSW (TfNSW) Customer Number when making your booking.

Please note: You cannot obtain your Motorcycle Learner Licence until you are 16 years and 9 months of age.

Course Duration

The Learner Course consists of 7 hours of training delivered over two consecutive days (3.5 hours each day).

The course has been carefully designed to help new riders develop the essential riding skills and knowledge required to ride safely.

All practical training is conducted within the controlled environment of a Rider Training Centre, providing a safe learning experience away from public roads.

What’s Included

Your course fee includes the use of:

  • Motorcycle
  • Helmet
  • CE-approved motorcycle gloves
  • High-visibility training vest

You are welcome to bring your own helmet, and CE-approved gloves if you prefer. However, personal motorcycles cannot be used during the course.

What to Wear

Participants must wear:

  • Long pants
  • A long-sleeved shirt or jacket
  • Enclosed footwear (sturdy shoes that provide ankle protection are recommended)

Throughout the course you will develop:

  • Basic motorcycle control skills
  • Safe riding techniques
  • Road-craft principles
  • Hazard awareness
  • The knowledge and confidence required to become a safe learner rider

Evening Courses

Evening Learner Courses are available at the following training centres:

  • Coffs Harbour
  • Central Coast (Ourimbah)
  • Newcastle

Mandatory Rider Safety Equipment

From 1 July 2026, all Motorcycle Learner, Provisional P1 and Provisional P2 riders in NSW are required to wear approved motorcycle gloves and a high-visibility vest or jacket while riding.

Approved Motorcycle Gloves

Gloves must be labelled by the manufacturer as complying with:

  • EN 13594:2015 (European Standard for Protective Gloves for Motorcycle Riders)

Approved High-Visibility Vest or Jacket

The garment must be labelled as complying with one of the following standards:

  • AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 – Class D/N
  • AS 4602.1:2024 – Class D/N
  • ISO 20471:2013

For comfort and safety, zippered or pull-over style vests are recommended as they are more secure and less likely to open or flap while riding.

If you feel you do not yet have the confidence or skills required to ride a motorcycle, you may wish to undertake a Private Motorcycle Training Session before attending the Learner Course.
